A magical and spectacular site unique in the world, Pamukkale, once the ancient Graeco-Roman city of Hierapolis, is a fairyland of dazzling white, grey, gold and brown formations. The hot, 37°c, thermal spring waters, rich in minerals and calcareous salts, run off the edge of a plateau creating this fantastic 100m high formation of stalactites, cataracts and basins. Since before Roman times the hot springs have been used for their therapeutic powers.

Aware of the dangers of overexploiting this natural resource, current arrangements only allow public access into small sections of the natural pools. The many hotels that have proliferated close to the calcium falls that all tap into the natural springs to create their own thermal pools, are now strictly controlled so that this natural phenomenon can endure.
