As the promontory where the fortress is situated is not easily accessible either from sea or land it was not inhabited continually throughout the history. It was surrounded by city walls first during the Hellenistic era and later new additions were constructed according to the demands of the time.

The monumental fortress of Alanya is truly the sturdiest and the most splendid of all fortresses in Anatolia today. The oldest known inscriptions too, it may be assumed that the whole fortress was built by Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat ı between 1226-1232.According to the inscription on it, the octagonal structure known today as the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) was the first structure built by the Seljuk's in Alanya and it is the key point of the fortress. The defense line that starts here, in accordance with the topography of the land ascends in a zigzagging manner although not always regularly. After a certain distance it joins a complex of buildings called Ehmedek, which was built, on top of a Hellenistic tower. The city wall, which turns southward after Ehmedek and descends, in order, to Adam Atacağı Cilvarda Burnu, Arab Evliyası Tower, Esad Tower and then by Tophane and Tersane, ends where it starts, at the red Tower.

Since the land between the Red Tower and Ehmedek is not so steep, in order to slow down attacks from the north, curtain walls were built outside the main city walls, in many places ditches were dug in the bedrock at the first lien of defense against attacks. The first lien of the fortress must have been considered secure since no such defense elements were used. One-hundred-forty towers are seen on top of the city walls that stretch a total of 6400 meters. These walls and towers, built with stone and mortar, had embrasures, holes to pour out hot oil and ramps to facilitate the movements of the soldiers in the fortress. The fortress was entered through the arched main gates with inscriptions on them. There were also smaller auxiliary gates.

Today, only a few of these gates are in good state of preservation. The fortress of Alanya, as observed on the map, may be divided into three sections based on the city walls and various defense lines. Dışkale (the outer Fortress) in the area surrounded by the walls that extend through Kızıl Kule, Ehdemek, Arab Evliyası, Tophane and then reach Kızıl kule again. Kızıl Kule, Tersane and Tophane are the most prominent Seljuk monuments in Alanya. Ortakale (the middle fortress) in the area surrounded by Ehdemek, Arab Evliyası and the walls of the outer fortress.

Seljuk monuments such as the Akşebe Mausoleum, baths and a building complex know as Ehdemek, as well as Ottoman Monuments such as the Süleymaniye Mosque, the hostel, the marketplace, and a late Byzantine chapel called Arab Evliyası are located in the Middle fortress. Iç kale (the inner Fortress) located on the highest point in the northwestern corner, of the promontory is the last shelter and point of defense. The area surrounded by high walls resembles a falcon crest and it was used for military purposes Seljuk monuments like palaces of the sultans and other important people, military establishments, training schools, cisterns as well as a church lasted to the late Byzantine era are found in the Inner Fortress. There is also an interesting little corner know as Adam Atacağı.

Antalya is one of the most established holiday resorts in Turkey. It is very popular with German tourists, and is one of the few coastal resorts that offers facilities during the winter season.

Located on the southern coast of Turkey and protected by the land mass to the north, the climate in this Mediterranean resort is normally very pleasant at any time of the year. Rainfall is higher than in the Aegean resorts, resulting in higher humidity during the summer.

Antalya is a busy university city, and the most important commercial center in the region.

Assos is an ancient walled city sitting on top of a hill overlooking the northern Aegean Sea. An important stronghold during the time of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, the city, unlike many of the ancient sites in Turkey is still home to a thriving community.

At the foot of the hill, the seaside town of Assos (Behramkale), is built on a narrow strip of land between the sea and steep cliffs. Built entirely of local stone, the many houses and hotels in the seaside village, create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Turkey. During the summer, space is at such a premium that vehicles have to be parked in a specially built car park outside the village.

Assos is the ideal location from which to explore this region.

Ayvalik is a charming port situated amid beautiful pine woods. Nearby, the Seytan Sofrasi (Devils Table), offers a splendid panorama of the archipelago along the Gulf of Ayvalik and the little Island of Alibey (Cunda), where there are pleasant seafood restaurants. Sarmisakli Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.

Ayvalik is a relatively undiscovered resort, centrally located for many of the historical sights in the region as well as being a very pleasant beach resort. During the summer season there are daily ferry services to the nearby Greek Island of Lesbos.

Ayvalik is a good location to overnight on motoring tours starting or ending in Istanbul.

The old village of Bitez is set back from the beach and populated almost entirely by local residents. The increase in tourism over the last few years has seen an expansion of the village along the sea front. The few original old stone houses have been converted into restaurants and bars and the spaces in between are now new hotels, apartments and shops.

Despite the expansion, Bitez has been able to retain its village atmosphere, providing a quieter place for a more casual evening out than the glitz of nearby Gumbet and Bodrum.

Bitez is the best place on the Peninsula for windsurfing, providing conditions for beginners and experiences surfers. Bitez is gaining a reputation worldwide as the place for surfers visiting Turkey.

The sandy beach is safe for children, and the beach sun loungers provided by the various cafes and bars are all free.

Bolu is the regional center for the western Black Sea region. It is a thriving commercial city providing a cultural base from which to explore the area. Bolu is also within daily traveling distance to several ski resorts in the mountains to the south.

The city of Canakkale lies on the southern side of the narrow Strait of the Dardanelles that connects the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean Sea. Canakkale is a ferry port connecting Europe to the Asian Continent to the south as well as a popular stopping point for yachts navigating the straits.

The many hotels, cafes and restaurants along the promenade, enjoy splendid views of Kilitbahir Fortress and the Canakkale Archaeological Museum as well as welcome business from the passing travelers.

In the fifteenth century, Sultan Mehmet II built fortresses on each side of the strait to control the passage of ships. The predominance of war graves in the region bear witness to the importance of the strategic location of the region. Heading west and south from Istanbul to see the many interesting sights along the Aegean coast, will inevitably bring you to Canakkale.

Cappadocia is the name given to the area around the cities of Aksaray, Nevsehir, Avanos, Urgup, Gulsehir, Goreme and Zelve. The area is famous for its ancient underground cities hewn into the soft volcanic rock. In fact, many houses and hotels in the area today are part building, part cave, providing a unique insight into the living conditions in ancient times.

Most visitors to the area spend two or three nights here as part of a tour, sufficient time to see the main aspects of the region.

At an elevation of 1000m, the region is also becoming popular as a base from which to take advantage of the developing ski resorts in the mountains close by. Good snow conditions are between November and May.

The name Cesme means fountain, and the city was so named because of the number of springs in the area. The Cesme peninsula extends from Izmir westwards into the blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

Always popular with the inhabitants of nearby Izmir, Cesme has been attracting an ever growing number of tourists from Europe. The many unspoiled bays and isolated beaches in the area are ideal for those whose idea of a holiday is to relax in the sun, swim and do as little as possible.

In order to avoid the maritime congestion in Izmir, Cesme has over the last few years been converted into the main international port for ferries arriving from Italy and other ports in Europe. The new 6 lane highway from the port connects Cesme quickly with Izmir and points north and south.

There is also a daily ferry during the summer between Cesme and the nearby Greek Island of Chios.

Dalyan is a small town situated in the middle of the broad delta of the Dalyan river, within a nature reserve established to preserve one of the worlds most important wetland areas.

Dalyan is just a short journey by riverboat to the ancient city of Caunos and the famous Iztuzu Beach, where the Loggerhead Turtles return each year to breed. Its unique location in the middle of the conservation area alongside the meandering Dalyan River make Dalyan very popular with bird watchers and naturalists.

It is a good location from which to explore the diverse aspects of the region. The town itself retains a village character and has many good restaurants and bars.

Fethiye is a popular resort of great charm and beauty. The houses of the old town look down on the little port from a hill crowned with a fortress built by the Knights of Rhodes. At Fethiye (ancient Termessos), there are more than twenty impressive rock tombs cut out of the steep rock wall above the town.

The new town of Fethiye is a very Turkish port and trading town on the SW Mediterranean coast.

Fethiye is within easy reach of the popular Calis beach and Sovaliye Island opposite the town. In May, basking under a warm sun, it is not unusual to see the snow capped peaks of the mountains in the distance to the east and south. The peaks in close by Oludeniz, provide excellent take-off points for some very scenic paragliding.

Gelibolu, also known as Gallipoli, lies on the northern side of the narrow Strait of the Dardanelles that connects the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean Sea. Its strategic location and the famous battles that took place here during the First World War, are the main reason most tourists visit the area.

The Gelibolu National Park was established to honor the 251,000 Turkish soldiers and 252,000 allied soldiers (mostly Australians and New Zealanders), who needlessly gave their lives on the Gelibolu Peninsula for what many claim to have been one of the Allies biggest blunders of the First World War.

For those who have personal reasons for including Gallipoli in their visit to Turkey, it is advisable to avoid the week that includes April 25, the date on which the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings is celebrated. During this week the limited accommodation facilities in the area are strained beyond capacity.

Gumbet is a holiday resort created to provide the usual facilities expected from a beach holiday. Unlike nearby Bodrum, Gumbet has a long beach curving around a bay, and the space for the hotels and apartments required to accommodate an expanding package holiday industry.

The center of Gumbet comes alive at night with several kilometers of rope lights in every conceivable color stretched around the outlines of almost every building, restaurant and disco bar. Flashing neon lights complete the picture in a final attempt to lure the passing tourists.

Disco bars thrash out this years and yesteryears sounds, mingling together in the narrow streets, while restaurants tempt the unwary with promises of Chinese, Indian, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Thai and even Turkish food, all from the same kitchen.

As the sun comes up it's time for a traditional breakfast bowl of soup to help soak up the excesses of the night, a couple of hours sleep, an afternoon posing on the beach, and another night on the town.

Gumusluk (Goo-moosh-look), is on the opposite side of the Bodrum Peninsula, about 20 minutes by car or local minibus from Bodrum. The village is still a lively fishing port, with more than a dozen fish restaurants along the sea front, displaying a wide variety of locally caught seafood.

Once the ancient city of Myndos, the village is now in a conservation area, so no cars are allowed in the center. The westerly aspect of Gumusluk provides some spectacular sunsets, aperitif in hand listening to the evocative pop-pop sound of the single piston fishing boats chugging their way into the harbor is a pleasure not to be missed.

With a population of nearly 3,000,000, Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey. It is the cultural center of the Aegean region, as well as being one of the main ports.

Once the ancient city of Smyrna, one of the Seven Churches of Revelation, and though little is left of the original city, Izmir makes an ideal first leg of a circular tour taking in all seven churches.

Though not really a resort, Izmir does offer a glimpse of a typical modern Turkish city with the usual contrasts between everyday working districts to the sophisticated shopping areas in Alsancak. Kas is the most southerly of all the Turkish resorts, nestling between the Mediterranean coast and 500m high mountains, this small town is protected from the prevailing northerly winds. Kas therefore enjoys a very pleasant climate all year round.

In ancient times, Kas was known as Antiphellos, the harbor of the town of Phellos, which for safety was high in the mountains. The ruins of Phellos can still be visited. Oludeniz is a small resort village flanked by the Aegean Sea to the south and the high, steep sided Babadag Mountain. The town itself resembles one big theme-less holiday camp, truly an out and out beach resort.

The topography of the area has made Oludeniz the paragliding capital of Turkey. Several companies offer two seater flights for complete beginners, as well as equipment hire for qualified pilots. The views for those brave enough to have a go are quite spectacular. Well worth a fright.

A magical and spectacular site unique in the world, Pamukkale, once the ancient Graeco-Roman city of Hierapolis, is a fairyland of dazzling white, grey, gold and brown formations. The hot, 37°c, thermal spring waters, rich in minerals and calcareous salts, run off the edge of a plateau creating this fantastic 100m high formation of stalactites, cataracts and basins. Since before Roman times the hot springs have been used for their therapeutic powers.

The small town of Yalikavak is becoming ever more popular as an alternative resort to Bodrum. Yalikavak still supports a thriving fishing industry and the restaurants around the picturesque harbor display a wide selection of fresh fish every day.
